The N2001, featuring i-mode Internet access, is the second WCDMA 3G handset in service anywhere around the world. And as this is one of the first true third-generation handset commercially availabled in retail shops, it was not a bad tried by NEC.

To our surprise the handset is relatively small that beats any current 2G handsets available on the market and not the 'brick' type early 90s size we were expecting from the first 3G terminal. It features a new organic EL design screen and 4096 colors, which doesn't use a backlight anymore, and so the screen is very slim. The N2001 feels very solid and looks great with no protuding antenna.

The Organic EL display shows extreme high resolution for a mobile phone.
The navigation buttons, with the ENTER button in the center surrounded four buttons pointing N,S,E,W. Great for online games.
The FOMA Card can be swapped between FOMA phones, including different models and holds 50 addresses book.

The voice quality is remarkable clear that equals to landline phones and the speaker is very clear even at full volume. It also handles multitask, such as simultaneous voice and i-mode.

This model delivers high-speed data communications with maximum 384kbps downlink and maximum 64kbps uplink, making it almost instant when accessing i-mode pages.

Users can send/ receive email of up to 10,000 English characters or 5,000 Japanese characters including 50KB of pictures (jpeg, gif) or music (midi) files.

Rating:

The Good: high-res screen; super fast connection to I-mode sites
The Bad: poor battery life; larger than typical i-mode handsets
Overall: A good first try by NEC but theirs nothing the N2001 can do that an I-mode phone can't, except faster speed.

Most Europeans are use to the heavy side, December 17, 2001

I have now been using this phone for a month now and I have not many complaints and offend show-off to my mates on how quick it can access imode pages. I was a bit skeptical at first because it was the first FOMA handset to be released, it was rather on the big size than I'm used to in Japan- most Europeans are properly use to this. I have dropped it numerous times and aside from the few scratches it still works fine. The speakerphone works great and very clear. The battery life has been weak. I talk about 10-20 minutes a day and need to charge it every two days.

The only really drawback is there are no built-in games on this phone. Fortunately, I don't play video games, but it is one of the features that other phones offer that this one doesn't. Overall I am very pleased with this phone and recommend it highly!

I'm carrying two phones now when I go out, November 9, 2001
User: Love it
My mum bought me the NEC N2001 as my birthday gift. It's so far the best phone anyone around here has. It's sleek and small and easy to use. My friends just loved it even when they looked at it just from the outside and when I opened it, they flipped over the sharp color moniter. The monitor is around 2-inches, the largest I've seem- the largest for imode was only 1.9-inches. I am very upset because as soon as I got this phone, the new N2002 came out. Even though there aren't many differences, wouldn't you want to buy the latest version of the cell phone if it were for the same price? Price, yes, this is another topic that hurts me inside. The price will keep going down and probably by next summer, 2002, this phone will be available for free. The phone has clear connections, however it is limited to the Tokyo area, now I am carrying two phones - the N2001 to friends within the Tokyo district and another i-mode phone to friends outside the Tokyo district.

If you like this phone, I recommend it, but if you wait a little while, I'll bet that there will be more and more phones like this and maybe even more smaller. P.S...I have a relative in Korea and she pre-ordered a phone that has a built-in camera, AND a T.V.!!! Could you believe it? She even plays Starcraft on her phone. Technology does make this world a lot more fun.

I have brought this mobile phone and would like to comment on it.
