The N2002 is the third FOMA 3G terminal to come out and at the first glance it does not seem much different to the first flip FOMA handset introduced by NEC back in October. The size and weight is identical to the N2001.

But when you get closer you will notice the outside is a beautifully designed phone, you will feel the titanium like plated cover instead of plastic covers from many current mobile phones on the market.

Again there are a lot of controls: a four-way cursor key, send and end buttons and two function keys. The keys are so well designed that you feel you've made a connection to the key when pressed and not accidentally pressed.

Another clamshell flip handset from NEC Watching video clips is extremely clear, even under direct sunlight. No slow down on the network, making watching video motion very smooth.

The screen is big and easy to read.

The full colour LCD screen is slightly larger than the N2001 at 2.2-inch with 65,536 colours. The resolution is even higher, making this phone one of the highest and sharpest screens I've seen so far on any mobile phones and beats any colour PDA displays hands-down. The frame rate is so smooth, it is like watching telly on the move. This is not a surprise as this model is specially designed for use with DoCoMo's new online content services called the i-motion, which serves video and music content through the handsets.

The phone has a built in scheduler that is pretty useful, but not up to scratch compared to Pocket Outlook for the Pocket PC. You could download a maximum size of 100Kb for i-motion file and 30Kb for i-appli application.

The voice quality comes in clear and loud that is equivalent to fixed-line telephone- no echoes and the sounds are crisper than the N2001. One of the biggest advantages is the multiaccess function, which allows simultaneous use of voice and packet data transmission. The ring tones are amazing with various built-in cool tunes from classical to pop and even at full volume, the quality do not degrade.

However, thanks to the advance mobile technology developed by Panasonic for the P2001V, we expected to have video-conferencing functions as standard on any 3G phones and to be able to see each other when we talk. Without this function the phone just does not seem as a complete package for 3G services.

Again, NEC fails to deliver a phone that meets our three 100's rule. But then, they are getting better each time they release a new handset.

Rating:

The Good: excellent screen content display; slick design; a truly multimedia phone specially build for 3G content services
The Bad: no video-conferencing; it is still rather big, compares to iMode handsets
Overall: A splendid phone, probably the single most desirable model on the market, but just let down by the lack of video-conferencing functions and failed to meet our three 100's rule. An excellent upgrade to the N2001!

User comments:

i-motion application is a big selling point, March 5, 2002
User: A user
I have really enjoyed this 3G phone for the last 2 months. The i-motion application is one of its major selling points, but is tiny-ness shouldn't make one think it's lacking in features.

The standard selection of rings has some very pleasing tones. I'm very impressed with the volume and clarity of the speaker. The sound quality certainly is sure as good as a standard wired phone.

The 2.2-inch LCD screen with 65,536 colours display is a really nice change from the smaller displays of my past mobile phones; it's great for web-browsing and video-streaming, as well as poking through the phone book more quickly.

This phone's aesthetics are fairly nice, with blue or silver tones; however my one complaint in this area is that the colours get scratches very easily.

The battery life is rather on the weak side, lasting no more than 3 days on standby.

Overall, this is a great phone in all ways, except size.

I have brought this mobile phone and would like to comment on it.
