3G policy in India will be non-uniform

October 2, 2007

Spectrum (the radio frequencies on which mobile services operate) for third generation services (3G) will not be available uniformly across the country. According to the department of telecom’s estimates, the availability of radio frequency services for 3G by April 2008 will range from 0-30 MHz across different circles.

A DoT internal note on this issues notes that Delhi will be the only circle where 30 MHz of spectrum for 3G services is expected to be vacated by the defence forces by April 2008.

The DoT note also states that the circles of Rajasthan, Haryana and West Bengal are likely to have about 25 MHz of 3G spectrum within this period while Mumbai, Punjab, UP (west) and Himachal Pradesh will have about 20 MHz, and adds that in the circles of Maharashtra, Gujarat and UP (east) and Bihar, the defence forces will vacate about 15 MHz of 3G spectrum for 3G services.

In 10 telecom circles, including Kolkata, Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Assam and North-East, the availability of 3G spectrum by April 2008 cannot be estimated and remains suspect.
