KTF 3G subscribers doubled in less than 3 months
October 2, 2007
South Korea's second-largest mobile carrier, said Sunday that the
number of subscribers to its 3G mobile service has more than doubled
to 2 million in less than three months.
KTF launched the 3G service "Show," based on high-speed
downlink packet access for faster data transfer and video telephony,
nationwide in March in a bid to surpass its arch-rival SK Telecom
Co. (KSE:017670) in the new mobile communications market. SK Telecom
commenced its own service in the same month.
It took less than three months for the number of KTF's 3G users
to grow from 1 million in early July to the 2-million mark, the
company noted.
Of the customers, 23.7 per cent and 22.6 per cent were in their
20s and 30s, respectively, showing that younger generations are
more receptive to the new mobile communications platform, the company
said. Male users outnumbered female ones by accounting for 53.8
per cent of the total subscriptions, it added.
KTF said it plans to increase the number of handsets designed for
Show from the current 17 to over 30 by the year's end and provide
diverse service charge schemes to stimulate its fledgling mobile
communications service.
South Korea has more than 42 million mobile phone users among its
population of 49 million. SK Telecom holds more than 50 per cent
of the 2G market, while KTF is far behind with less than 35 per
cent.
