Uruguayans Choose Swedes
September 26, 2007
Swedish equipment giant Ericsson has signed a contract with Movistar,
the main mobile operator in Uruguay to provide it with a new 3G
network. According to Movistar, which is part-owned by Spanish operator
Telefonica, Ericsson will be the sole supplier and network integrator
for the new WCDMA/HSPA core and radio network.
Ericsson reported that its HSPA solution will enable mobile data
download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps and upload speeds of 1.4Mbps.
It said that its advanced technology will enable operators to more
than double their system capacity and cut response times for interactive
services.
Two years ago Chinese mobile equipment and handset vendor, Huawei
Technologies, claimed to have conducted the first pilot test of
UMTS services in South America, when it announced that it had completed
trials with Uruguayan operator Administración Nacional de
Telecomunicaciones (ANTEL).
