Nokia No 1 in 3G networks in a few quarters

date: April 20, 2001 - source by: Reuters

The chief executive of Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia said on Friday he believed the firm could become the number one player in third-generation (3G) networks in a few quarters' time.

``Our 3G orderbook puts us at par with the industry leaders and we feel we will be number one in a matter of a few quarters,'' Jorma Ollila told CNBC television following the company's above-forecast first-quarter result.

Nokia in April has announced a raft of 3G network orders with the likes of France Telecom-controlled Orange and Hutchison Whampoa .

Nokia has said earlier it believes it can become number one in 3G networks but has not given a time frame. The field is led by Swedish rival Ericsson and also including Canada's Nortel.
