Japan's 3G launch:telecoms' moment of truth

Japan will lead the world next month when it unveils the first of the
new third-generation FOMA (Freedom Of Mobile multimedia Access) mobile
phones, capable of high-speed Internet, data, video and quality music
services.
Investors are keeping a close watch on Japan's experience for clues as
to which new services will succeed and how lucrative they will be among
Net-savvy mobile users against a background of a global economic downturn
and a bruising bear market.
The launch will also shed the first light on whether it was foresight
or madness that prompted Europe's top telecoms companies to pay around
120 billion euros ($106 billion) for European 3G cellphone licences --
only to see shares and credit ratings fall.
