Debitel close to UMTS deal with D.Telekomdate: April 23, 2001 Germany's Debitel is close to agreeing a deal with Deutsche Telekom which would allow it to offer next-generation cellphone services over the telecoms group's network, a newspaper reported on Monday. Debitel, which dropped out of an auction last year for German third-generation service licences, said earlier this month it has already struck a similar deal with Britain's Vodafone , becoming the first virtual UMTS network operator in Europe's biggest telecoms market. The Financial Times Deutschland cited unnamed sources as saying Debitel -- controlled by Swisscom -- and Deutsche Telekom were working on the final details of an accord. Debitel would market Telekom products and would be able to offer services including electronic mail and Internet access over Telekom's network. German telecoms operator MobilCom said on Friday it would rent mobile phone network capacity from E-Plus, the country's third-largest cellphone company owned by Dutch KPN's mobile unit. The agreement allows MobilCom customers to use wireless voice and data services over E-Plus' network when they are out reach of MobilCom's UMTS network. Viag Interkom and Group 3G -- a joint venture between Spain's Telefonica and Finland's Sonera -- are in talks about a similar agreement, the newspaper added.
