Malaysia not think about 3G Licenses until late 2001date: April 25, 2001 Malaysia will only decide by year-end on the licensing of third generation mobile phone Internet technology, or 3G, and how to offer them to prospective operators, the national Bernama news agency reported Wednesday, quoting a senior government official. Chia Kwang Chye, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia, said Malaysia will first concentrate on implementing the general packet radio system, or GPRS, services, which hasn't been fully utilized. "3G services go beyond voice - involving data and content - and content development is still in the infancy stage in Malaysia", Chia was quoted telling reporters after opening a business seminar. He said the government was carefully studying the options and approaches adopted by other countries in offering the 3G license, such as the auction or "beauty contest" methods. Earlier this year, Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister Leo Moggie said Malaysia is targeting to introduce 3G services by the second half of 2002. In a speech earlier, Chia said Malaysia has been "quite fast" in adopting new technology, noting that the number of mobile phone subscribers has surpassed fixed line customers one year earlier than forecast.
