3G too slowdate: April 26, 2001 - source: The Minister of Information and Communication (MOIC) in Korea Yang Seung-taik told reporters on Thursday that the next-generation IMT-2000 telecommunications market will not last long as its maximum speed is merely 2Mbps. Yang added that it is wrong to invest several trillions of won in trying out the wideband-code division multiple access (W-CDMA) IMT-2000 service. The minister also said his ministry will take the occasion of upcoming selection of the operator of the CDMA-based IMT-2000 as a turning point in the ministry's policy for realigning the nation's telecommunications industry. Commenting on the private sector's request to elongate the payment period of contribution fund for the IMT-2000 license on CDMA, the minister said that his ministry will seek to reduce the W1.5 trillion contribution fund for the CDMA license.
