China do not need 3G yetdate: April 29, 2001 The two telecom giants in China, China Mobile and China Unicorn has no immediate needs for any multimedia next generation 3G services according to industry source. Commercial 3G service is not expected to launch until the end of 2003 at the earliest claims Connie Hsu, an industry analyst at Pyramid Research. "The government is not in a rush to push 3G, the market is not mature enough and the technology still beset with bugs." China at present is still trying to improve its present network, it is hoping to retire the last of its first generation analog networks this year. It is just at the start of introducing the benefits of 2G services such as SMS and WAP. China Mobile and China Unicom are not ignoring wireless Internet, but trying to go to the easier path and cheaper options of GPRS 2.5G. Another reasons why the delay of 3G in China is that it is developing its own 3G standard known as TD-SCDMA. China will eventually adopt its own standard and an international standard, probability the more widely used WCDMA. And when China do roll out 3G by the end of 2003, it will have the largest number of subscribers on any 3G networks in the world.
