O2 demonstrated next-generation callsdate: April 10, 2002 Mobile operator O2, formerly known as Digifone, staged a live demonstration of 3G mobile telephony at ICT Expo in Dublin yesterday. The demonstration was a first for Ireland and was carried out with assistance from O2's sister company Manx Telecom, which runs Europe's only fully operational 3G network on the Isle of Man. Danuta Gray, chief executive of O2 Ireland, said the staging marked a new era in communications and that it proved the company's commitment to offer its Irish customers the latest in services and applications. Speaking with journalists, she said the lack of fixed broadband in Ireland plays into the hands of mobile operators offering 3G services. Gray also said costs for introducing a 3G infrastructure would be reduced by the fact that 2G masts can be reused for transmitting 3G signals. "We will be spending capital wisely over the roll-out period," she said. O2 would be keen to be able to share sites and possibly even infrastructure with other operators, as happens in Germany and the UK, she added.
