Malaysia has no clue on investment leveldate: April 12, 2002 Malaysia has not set a minimum investment amount on telecoms operators for 3G mobile services, a government minister said on Friday and has no clue on the right level to set. "It's a business proposition. The government has not set any minimum," Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister Leo Moggie told the press. "But operators must take note their roll out programme will have to take into account that it will not be commercially used until 2004 and even then, the level of usage will not be high initially." The government will hold a "beauty parade" in July to award 3G mobile licenses and has set a May 29 deadline for companies to submit applications for three spectrum In last November, Maxis and Technology Resources Industries have both said that they are looking to the 3GVNO model rather than acquire licenses and expand any existing networks. It has been the Malaysian government's intention to force consolidation amongst the five operators in the industry and so it is highly likely they will allow 3GVNOs to exist.
