AT&T Wireless committed to 3G by 2004date: April 15, 2002 AT&T has announced that it plans to raise $3bn (EUR3.4bn) and a third of that is to be used to fund the deployment of UMTS, which it expects to begin in late 2003. Fitch Ratings has said that AT&T's 3G deployment was very aggressive and potentially overly optimistic considering the expected lack of development in the data market by 2003. Other factors that were cited by the ratings agency against the 2003 rollout were the recent deployment of GPRS, the expected deployment of EDGE and the likely technical issues involved with UMTS infrastructure and handsets. A consideration in this early deployment involves the rights and obligation of DoCoMo's investment in AT&T Wireless of launching UMTS in at least 13 markets by mid-2004.
