Qualcomm-Enabled 3G CDMA2000 1X Handsets Shipping to Brazilian Operatorsdate: April 16, 2002 Qualcomm announced that a range of third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X products -- based on the Company's MSM5xxx family of Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipset, system software and integrated applications software -- have begun volume shipments from manufacturers to operators in Brazil. The CDMA2000 1X products from a number of global manufacturers include Internet-enabled and voice-only handsets, as well as Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) data cards and data modules. "With its ability to address a wide variety of subscribers, CDMA2000 1X technology can easily meet the demanding market needs of Brazilian operators for the launch of 3G commercial networks," said Don Schrock, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "By offering a broad range of models and feature sets for wireless 1X handsets using our MSM5xxx family of chipsets and system solutions, manufacturers worldwide are delivering cost-effective and feature-rich products -- from voice-centric phones to high-speed Internet-capable devices -- designed specifically for the diverse Brazilian marketplace." Some manufacturers plan to roll out multiple models for the Brazilian market. CDMA2000 1X devices based on Qualcomm's chipsets and Wireless Internet Launchpad applications software suite, support packet data rates of up to 153 kbps. These devices enable a variety of features, including tri-mode radio configuration, browser-enabled Internet access, two-way SMS, voice-activated dialing and memo capabilities, dual display, and speaker phone and downloadable ringer tones. The new CDMA2000 1X handsets will offer talk times approximately up to 4 hours and standby times up to 350 hours, and are extremely lightweight, ranging from 99 to 123 grams, depending on the type of battery used. In addition, new data products addressing packet data and Mobile IP capabilities are also being rolled out for the Brazilian market.
