KDDI to test credit system on next-generation servicedate: April 18, 2002 KDDI and four other companies said Thursday they have agreed to launch a trial credit settlement service on KDDI's third-generation cell phone service this autumn. Using a new multipurpose IC card, KDDI will operate the credit service together with JCB Co ., Toyota Finance Corp., Mitsui Sumitomo Card Company Ltd. and UC Card Co . The companies said the results of the trial will determine whether they commercialize the service. KDDI launched a 144kbps high-speed CDMA2000 1x 3G cellular phone service simultaneously in major cities across Japan on April 1, 2002. CDMA2000 is recognized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to be an IMT-2000 third-generation cellular communications system. Initially, 2GHz bands were required for accreditation, but the ITU later determined that frequency bands other than 2GHz, such as 800MHz bands, were acceptable in IMT-2000 systems.
