InterDigital Presents Advantages Of WTDD Technology For 3GSM Networks At GSM Meeting

date: April 18, 2002

InterDigital Communications Corporation, architect, designer and provider of advanced wireless technologies and product platforms, highlighted the advantages of Wideband Time Division Duplex (WTDD) technology for 3GSM networks, driven by its power to enhance the quality of service and the continuity of the user experience in the migration to 3G products and services.

The presentation was delivered to the 47th GSM Plenary meeting held this week in Rome and attended by over 500 members of the GSM Association, representing mobile network operators and suppliers worldwide.

In his presentation, InterDigital's Chief Operating Officer Rip Tilden stated that WTDD technology, part of the 3GSM WCDMA standard, can significantly enhance the experience for 3G users as they access advanced data services, making the technology an important competitive offering for operators.

He defined the continuity of user experience as the highest quality of service possible as users move smoothly among a wide range of advanced data services and among 3G networks globally utilizing a variety of devices.

"WTTD is 3GSM technology for the unpaired spectrum. The great majority of mobile operators have both paired and unpaired spectrum as part of their 3G licenses," said Mr. Tilden. "When deployed with WCDMA Frequency Division Duplex, or FDD, technology, designed for the paired bands in 3G spectrum, the complementary wideband version of TDD will efficiently deliver a continuity of user experience to 3G customers. It will enable highly efficient use of the 3G spectrum with full mobility, increased capacity and service roaming. This will give operators, equipment makers and applications developers significant opportunities for revenue and earnings enhancements by responding effectively to growing customer demand for advanced data intensive wireless services."

In discussing the evolution of cellular air interface standards and the migration path for today's GSM to 3GSM, Mr. Tilden continued, "The migration to WCDMA FDD and WTDD technologies will form the central pathway for the great majority of 3G service providers around the world who are moving from today's GSM and GPRS to 3GSM services."

Mr. Tilden concluded, "For operators, WTDD technology is more efficient and adds capacity for a number of data intensive services such as multi-media messaging services or MMS, synchronization of PDAs, Internet chat and picture, video and music downloads. Using FDD and WTTD technologies together offers a complete 3GSM solution and enhances the quality and continuity of the wireless experience as users move from data applications to voice and back again."
