Poland delays 3Gdate: April 23, 2002 Agreeing to requests from the country's three operators, Poland's newly-created government telecoms agency, Telecommunications and Postal Regulation Office (URTiP), has decided to postpone the start of commercial 3G services by a year. The decision would give the operators until the start of 2005 to launch their next generation services. The undersecretary in charge of telecoms for the Infrastructure ministry, Krzysztof Heller, said that the government saw no point in hurrying up the rollout. "We are not such a rich country where we can afford to spend money on something that may or may not be a commercial success," he added. Heller even indicated that URTiP could delay the rollout for even longer, depending on how the technology progresses in other European countries. Polish operators PTC, Polkomtel and PTK were expected to spend EUR3.1bn to set up their networks in time for the original 2003 deadline.
