J-Phone to postpone 3G rolloutdate: April 24, 2002 J-Phone, Japan's number two mobile carrier, will postpone for the second time its 3G cellphone service to December from June because of delays in developing the new phones, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said. European cellphone makers are working on new technology that would allow mobile phone users to make calls from anywhere in the world, and J-Phone is waiting until the handsets for that technology are ready and compatible with systems elsewhere, to facilitate roaming. For now, J-Phone will only offer a trial version of its third-generation service to 2000 subscribers in Tokyo, the paper said, without citing sources. Katsuo Hori, a telecoms analyst at BNP Paribas, said there had been concern about the hefty investments required to set up 3G networks. "The news report shows that J-Phone is taking gradual steps, which is a positive sign," he said.
