Live Video Streaming System Developed by DoCoMo and PacketVideo Delivers Content to FOMA Usersdate: April 30, 2002 PacketVideo announced that the company has partnered with NTT DoCoMo to deliver V-Live, a live video streaming service for FOMA (3G) video-enabled mobile phones. The trial service is scheduled to begin on April 26, 2002, targeting enterprise users and consumers. V-Live is a service based on the FOMA live video streaming platform that NTT DoCoMo announced on August 28, 2001. This platform enables the delivery of a single live stream to numerous handsets (FOMA video-enabled phones) simultaneously. NTT DoCoMo and PacketVideo jointly developed the technology, enabling MPEG-4 streams to be transferred in Realtime Transport Protocol (RTP) from pvServer™ and converted into a 3G-324M-based format compliant with FOMA video-enabled phones. The streaming solution at the foundation of this service is PacketVideo’s pv3 Mobilemedia System™ platform. V-Live enables numerous FOMA videophones to simultaneously view real time or archived video from a monitoring camera or live event. Examples of V-Live content include live camera monitoring of children, pets, and elders, and security surveillance for construction sites and stores. NTT DoCoMo also established the “FOMA Live Streaming Delivery Trial Consortium,” consisting of businesses and academic organizations with the goal of developing V-Live applications and researching their market opportunities. Enterprise applications include remote training, employee communications, virtual tours and remote learning. The consortium conducted field trials through March 31, 2002, the success of those trials has resulted in the April 26th V-Live launch.
