Hutchison lowers handset prices
April 9, 2003
Hutchison 3G, which is operating its service under the brand name 3 and
the first mobile operator in Europe to offer WCDMA 3G services, has reduced
the price of its three handsets in a sign that consumers are not taking
to the new technology that offers high-speed mobile data access.
Price on the Motorola A830 has fallen to as little as £125, compared
with its standard entry-level handset prices of £400.
The mobile operator, which is pinning its hopes for success on new flagship
services such as live video calls, has also extended an introductory offer
of half-price handsets - which was supposed to have finished at the end
of last month, - for a further month.
Recent consumer surveys have found the 3G service too expensive with
consumers also reluctant to sign on since there are so few users of the
new technology.
One industry source said that 3's third-generation phone service was
not selling as well as hoped at independent mobile phone retailers such
as The Link, Phones 4U and Carphone Warehouse.
3 said recently it had sold about 10,000 handsets in the first couple
of weeks since its 3rd March 2003 launch.
