Motorola To Deploy 3G Network in Indonesia
April 9, 2003
PT. Telkom, Indonesia’s largest telecommunications operator, has selected
a Motorola CDMA2000 1X system to bring 3G wireless services to the ten
provinces of Sumatra. Sumatra is one of the largest islands and one of
the fastest growing areas in Indonesia.
The contract win is the 15th announced 3G contract for Motorola worldwide,
and the 7th in the Asia-Pacific region. The estimated contract value for
the initial phase of the CDMA2000 1X network rollout is nearly US $30
million, with allowances for additional capacity should PT. Telkom decide
to expand the network. The network is set for commercial deployment in
April 2003, and will run on the 800 MHz band.
“Motorola has a long history of success in the CDMA market, and has a
leadership position in the number of CDMA2000 1X network contracts worldwide,”
said Simon Leung, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola’s
Global Telecom Solutions Sector Asia Pacific Region. “We’re dedicated
to helping our customers bring new networks on-line in the most cost effective
manner, and we’re thrilled to have been selected to assist PT. Telkom
in bringing 3G to the 40 million residents of Sumatra.”
Motorola's CDMA2000 1X architecture builds upon existing 2G or 2.5G networks
by adding packet based network elements. For the PT. Telkom network, these
network elements include the access node from Motorola’s global strategic
alliance partner Cisco Systems, that enables the radio access network
to be IP capable. With Cisco’s access node, Motorola’s CDMA2000 1X radio
network offers a standards compliant solution that offers incremental
features such as enhanced availability and scalability that help address
the most critical needs of mobile wireless operators.
