3 Wins Crucial Loan From DoCoMo
April 11, 2003 - source: BWCS
Hutchison 3G (UK) has secured a vital £200 million loan from Japanese
mobile operator NTT DoCoMo. The capital injection forms part of a £1 billion
loan that Hutchison requires to secure an extended loan facility from
its banks. The company recently launched the first 3G services in the
UK under the 3 moniker nearly two years later than expected. As a result
of its delayed launch Hutchison needs its £2.235 billion loan agreement
with its banks extended for at least a year beyond its current March 2004
maturity date.
Hutchison (UK) is hoping to raise £1 billion via its three parent companies,
Hutchison Whampoa, NEC and NTT DoCoMo. Although DoCoMo has been reported
to have agreed its £200 million loan, there have been conflicting statements
from the company stating that it is still undecided about increasing its
overseas 3G exposure. DoCoMo saw the value of the US$16 billion in foreign
investments it made during 2000 and 2001 plummet last year as the 3G expectations
were downgraded and the telecoms sector underwent a dramatic re-adjustment.
As well as coming to market two years later than planned, Hutchison,
like other 3G operators, has been forced to dramatically downgrade its
subscriber and revenue forecasts. It has been reported in the Japanese
press that the UK company has cut its 3G targets by as much as 75%.
