3 confirms price cut for 3G phone
April 12, 2003
3, the first 3G mobile operator in Europe, confirmed on Friday a reduction
in handset price for the NEC e606 after weak sale figures.
Analysts say heavy discounting may be the only way the Hong Kong-based
conglomerate will hit an ambitious target of selling two million 3G phones
in Europe by the end of this year.
If customers connect to 3 before 30th April 2003 they could get the NEC
e606 at half price for £200 with the 3toGo price plan.
The 3toGo price plan is a no minimum contract and no monthly line rental
service. Customers can simply pay for the voice calls and video they use.
Voice calls start from 5p per minute with no peak charges for the plan
and includes£10 worth of content a month for the first three months.
3 UK is offering three packages: a pay-as-you-go deal with no monthly
rental, and two packages with bundled voice, video and e-mail allowances
priced at 60 and 100 pounds per month.
Whereas half-price handsets had previously only been for the latter two
packages, 3 said they would now also be available to pay-as-you-go customers
until the end of April.
Customers to 3 can watch be highlights from the Barclaycard Premiership,
the latest ITN video news bulletin, video weather forecasts and some classic
comedy video clips.
