Maxis to spend over £121billion on mobile networks within 3 years
April 14, 2003
Malaysia's Maxis Communications will spend about RM800mil to RM1.2bil
(£121million - £182million) over the next 2–3 years on 3G
mobile telecoms services in the Klang Valley region, said chief executive
officer Jamaludin Ibrahim.
(Maxis will launch 3G) at the end of next year. So I have to spend
9-12 months before that launch date to build up the network, he
said in an interview in Kuala Lumpur.
Maxis plans to offer pilot coverage by end-2003 or early next year, and
commercially launch the service by end-2004.
Jamaludin said the initial spending would cover only part of the Klang
Valley and that further investment would be required.
“Beyond the Klang Valley, we are doing what we call a co-ordinated roll-out
with Telekom Malaysia,” which essentially means segmenting areas outside
the Klang Valley into regions, with each firm making initial investments
in its own region and running domestic roaming in those covered by the
other.
The co-ordinated roll-out pact, which spans about five years, allows
both companies to defer significant 3G investments until the total customer
base picks up. Within 10 to 15 years the industry is likely to spend a
total of RM7.5bil.
