mobilkom Starts 3G Push

April 16, 2003 - source: BWCS

mobilkom Austria has announced that it will begin sales of its first 3G handsets to non-business customers on 25 April. The company says the Siemens U10 terminals will be available in mobilkom shops for Euro799.99 and services can be tried free until mid-July.

mobilkom Austria main rival in Austria, Hutchison 3G, plans to launch 3G on 3rd May and is offering the NEC e606 for Euro576- Euro224 cheaper than the U10.

The prices for 3G services will be the same as those for GSM and GPRS, with the prices for downloading video clips starting at Euro0.50. Content partners include MTV, the National Football League, CNN, n-tv and Euronews.

mobilkom switched on its 3G networks in Austria last September, but until now services have only been available on a trial basis. Dr. Boris Nemsic, the CEO of mobilkom and COO for Wireless at parent company Telekom Austria, said: “We have brought our network up to the state-of-the-art in the past six months, and are now opening it up to our customers.” The company has erected more than 1,000 UMTS base stations over the last few months and its 3G networks now cover 42% of the population. Austria is just one of the countries covered by the new BWCS 3G status report.
