Samsung to launch handsets next year

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chipmaker and No. 3 mobile handset maker, said that it plans to release handsets for 3G wireless services on the market early next year when Korean local carriers are expected to begin full mobile service under the new WCDMA platform.

"We will launch the 3G handsets on the market early next year," the company's investor relations team vice-president Chu Woo-Sik told reporters.

Samsung indicated interest in making 3G handsets when it revealed the SGH-Z100 at the CeBIT tradeshow March, a new 3G handset that is designed for UMTS networks. The handset features high-end functionalities such as video telephony and high-speed data transmission capabilities.
