KPN Declines To Further Fund Hutchison 3G
April 26, 2003 - source: BWCS
Dutch telco KPN has declined the invitation to pour a further £150 million
into 3 - which recently launched 3G services in the UK. The other proud
parents of 3, Hutchison Whampoa and NTT DoCoMo, have each backed a shareholder’s
loan equivalent to £10 million for every 1% of equity they own in the
company.
As reported yesterday, Japanese mobile operator DoCoMo, recently approved
a shareholder loan of £200 million to swell Hutchison 3G’s fighting fund.
However, KPN said today that it regarded the loans as “voluntary” and
did not believe it was under any obligation to make more funds available.
The Dutch company clearly stated at the end of September last year that
it would not make more cash available to Hutchison 3G.
KPN wrote off the value of its 15% stake in Hutchison’s UK operation
last year and tried to sell it off. Its partners in the new venture have
yet to react to its latest decision.
Just in
Shortly after KPN declined the funding, Hutchison Whampoa said on Friday
it will cover the shortfall for Three UK.
". . . we will fund the shortfall," a spokeswoman for Hutchison in Hong
Kong said Friday. "That still stands."
