3G For Guatemala
April 28, 2003 - source: BWCS
Third-generation mobile services are set to be introduced in Guatemala
next month, with 50,000 customers expected by year-end. According to a
report from BNamericas, the local cellular operator Sercom, which is owned
by America Movil subsidiary Telgua, plans to launch data services on its
new CDMA2000 1xRTT network next month. While the company has been offering
voice services over its new network since January, the launch of the data
offering will mark the official start date of the 1xRTT system, which
was installed by Nortel Networks of Canada.
Although proponents of rival high-speed mobile technologies such as wideband
CDMA say that CDMA2000 1x does not qualify as a true 3G service, there
can be no doubting the technology’s popularity with consumers. A CDMA2000
1x service launched twelve months ago by KDDI in Japan has so far attracted
more than seven million customers, while the W-CDMA service of its competitor
NTT DoCoMo has garnered just 350,000 users in 18 months. CDMA2000 1xRTT
offers maximum data transmission speeds of 144kbps, with realistic speeds
of around 40-60kbps. The Latin American joint venture between Portugal
Telecom and Telefonica recently contracted Motorola to supply a CDMA2000
1xRTT network in Brazil.
