World Congress event cancel

The 3G World Congress, an international telecoms conference scheduled to take place in Hong Kong, has been postponed as SARS continues to cause concern among organisers and delegates.

Originally scheduled for June 9-13 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the organisers - the Institute for International Research (IIR) - said they did not rule out changing the venue and taking the congress out of Hong Kong should the disease show no signs of abating soon.

An IIR executive said despite the recent drops in the number of new infections, congress participants were still concerned ``so long as new cases emerge every day''.

He said the IIR aimed, at this stage, to bring the congress back this autumn. A decision should be made next week.

It is understood the organisers of CommunicAsia 2003 in Singapore, one of Asia's biggest telecom events, will also decide this week whether to postpone their June 17-20 event. In China, the 5th Annual China CDMA International Summit has also been postponed due to SARS.
