Maxis Starts Malaysian 3G Trial

April 1, 2004 -source: BWCS

Malaysian mobile operator Maxis Communications has started an eight-month UMTS trial, covering the Kuala Lumpur central business district, Bandar Sunway and the vicinity of Putrajaya and Cyberjaya. A full commercial launch is scheduled for the end for the year.

The 16 square km area of the CBD is believed to be the single largest 3G deployment in Malaysia to date and includes nodes at the Putra World Trade Centre and other key business venues. By the end of 2004, Maxis expects to have rolled out its UMTS infrastructure to a total of 300 sites in the Klang Valley, at an investment of RM200 million (US$52.6 million).

Around 300 selected Maxis employees and customers will participate in the pilot, which will offer a range of enhanced services including video and location-based applications, plus the usual 3G content mix of games, sports, news and entertainment.

Maxis is one of only two 3G licence holders in Malaysia. Its larger rival Celcom, owned by Telekom Malaysia, started 3G trials earlier this year.
