Datang introduce home-grown 3G phone
April 1, 2004
Datang Mobile Communications announced yesterday in Beijing the world's first 3G handset based on China's own TD-SCDMA standard, the local press has reported.
The new handset comes with an integrated camera and supports various multimedia functions. Datang expects to start mass production of the handset in the first half of next year.
"This is a significant step to bring the whole industry closer to commercial use of that home-grown mobile standard," said Datang in a statement yesterday.
The Ministry of Information Industry has chosen Datang's new handset for the forthcoming TD-SCDMA trials in May. WCDMA trails started last month and CDMA2000 tests are expected to begin in April. All domestic telecommunications operators participating in the 3G trials are required to test the TD-SCDMA technology.
The Chinese government has yet to issue 3G licenses because the home-grown standard is unproven compared to other established standards such as WCDMA and CDMA2000. Datang's handset marks a milestone for TD-SCDMA's commercial future and analysts believe the government will award 3G licenses in the first quarter of next year.
