Fixed-mobile substitution starts with 3G

April 13, 2004

Fixed-mobile substitution presents a major opportunity for mobile operators, while threatening the very existence of fixed operators. "The Road to Fixed-Mobile Substitution Starts with 3G" by Analysys, assesses the extent to which voice traffic will continue to migrate from fixed to mobile networks. Through extensive case study analysis, the report evaluates the key reasons for vast differences in mobile voice usage and revenues that currently exist between markets. It identifies short term strategies for fixed and mobile operators that can be effective at changing the traffic balance between fixed and mobile networks.

The report shows how the introduction of 3G technology, with its significant capacity, quality and cost benefits, will enable true fixed-mobile substitution, removing the traditional 2G limitation of needing to maintain high pricing and low usage. The report provides a forecast for voice revenues and usage levels across fixed and mobile networks for Western Europe.

The Road to Fixed-Mobile Substitution Starts with 3G answers your key questions:

- what are the reasons for big differences in mobile voice usage between operators and markets? to what extent has traffic migration from fixed to mobile networks already occurred?

- what strategies can fixed and mobile operators adopt to substantially affect the voice traffic proportion between fixed and mobile networks

- to what extent are users deserting fixed lines, and will this trend continue or reverse? how will 3G affect the balance of power between fixed and mobile operators?

- what are the forecasts for fixed and mobile voice traffic levels, lines, revenues and growth in mobile-terminated calls for the period 2004 to 2009?

Who should read this report?

- Mobile operators. Understand the key short-term opportunities for increasing voice usage and revenues. Understand the key role voice telephony will play as part of a successful 3G strategy.

- Fixed operators. Understand the current extent of fixed-mobile substitution, as well as forecasts for a decline in fixed voice traffic. Understand effective strategies for avoiding substantial revenue loss.

- Regulators and analysts. Develop an understanding of the extent and implications of voice traffic movements from fixed to mobile networks.

- Mobile network equipment vendors. Understand the extent to which fixed-mobile substitution will drive investment in 2G and 3G networks.
