Finnish operators to share 3G networks

April 19, 2004

Mobile operators in Finland are allowed to cooperate in building their 3G mobile networks. The Finnish ministry of transport and communications decided last Wednesday to allow the country's four 3G licence holders to share the cost of building of their networks and hopefully speed up the rollout of the new service.

Finland awarded 3G licenses in 1999 but has been slow to rollout their networks. Under the new agreement mobile operators can cooperate as long as each operator's own network covered at least 35% of the population.

The four 3G licence holders are Radiolinja, TeliaSonera, Tele2 and Finnet.
