Hutchison to offer Samsung 3G handsets
April 27, 2004
Hutchison Whampoa will be adding South Korea's Samsung to its list of 3G mobile handset suppliers.
Korean deputy prime minister and minister of finance and economy Lee Hun-jai spoke with Hutchison charmain Li Ka-shing on Friday in Hong Kong while on a global tour to attract foreign investment to Korea.
The JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported Hutchison will select Samsung's mobile phones as the main products for its 3G mobile service. Hutchison has launched 3G operations in Europe, Hong Kong and Australia. Motorola and NEC are the main handset suppliers to Hutchison but unattractive handsets and late deliveries by handset makers were to blame for the group's poor sales performance last year.
Hutchison 3UK has recently added the Nokia 7600 to its collection of handsets, having previously ruled out offering the handset due to its lack of video calling facility. Following sales strong of the 7600 via the Carphone Warehouse, 3UK had deciding to offer the handset to help boost its subscriber level.
The addition of Samsung will add more choice to Hutchison's small handset range. Hutchison is also expected to be offering the 8110 handset from Korea's LG Electronics.
