Swedish 3G license transfer put on hold

April 29, 2004

Swedish telecom regulator PTS proposed yesterday not to allow Orange SA to sell its Swedish 3G mobile phone license to TeliaSonera AB and Tele2 AB.

TeliaSonera and Tele2 already share one license through the jointly-owned Svenska UMTS-nat AB. The company had wanted an extra license because it needed extra capacity to accommodate the expectation in mobile internet takeoff.

PTS argued TeliaSonera and Tele2 already have a dominant position in the cellular market and the transfer of the license could further reduce competition in the market, which they say is already weak. The regulator will consider responses to the proposal for a month before it makes a final decision.
