Vodafone lays down 3G date down under

Vodafone in Australia has finally announced a start date for its antipodean 3G services. The company said that it plans to begin offering next generation mobile phone services in the key cities of Melbourne and Sydney from October of this year.
Unusually, Vodafone is taking a staggered approach to rolling out its 3G network and indicated that Australia's other major cities, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth will not be covered by its high-speed mobile service until at least the first quarter of next year.
The Newbury UK-based giant is currently sharing its 3G infrastructure build with Optus, owned by Singapore Telecom. Meanwhile, Australia's largest mobile and fixed line operator, Telstra, is moving up on the rails with a plan to launch 3G services in five major cities by the middle of this year. Telstra will share the 3G network being built by Hutchison Whampoa.
