TIM predict half of subscribers using 3G in 2007
April 17, 2005
The chief executive of Italian mobile operator TIM predicted that over half of the company's customers will be using 3G technology by the end of 2007.
Marco De Benedetti said in a meeting with analysts that in three years time over half of TIM's customers will be on 3G, equalling around 18.7 million lines.
He also said that the life span of handsets is about two years, falling to less than one year for top tier clients. Sales of 3G handsets could be more than 50% of the total at the end of this year and over 70% in 2007, he added.
Overall Italian mobile phone penetration reached 109% in 2004 and is expected to rise to 119% in 2007, the company said. In 2004, only 7% of the 63.2 million mobile phone subscribers in Italy used 3G technology.
