Hutchison seek 3G spectrum in Poland
April 17, 2005
Hutchison Whampoa is seeking to expand its 3G presence in Europe after the company confirmed that it is bidding for a UMTS license in Poland.
It confirmed that Qiana Investment, one of five bidders for the UMTS spectrum, is bidding on behalf of the conglomerate.
Hutchison said the Polish market offers attractive incentives such as potential demand for value-added services and strong economic growth.
Other bidders for the spectrum include incumbent operators Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa, Polkomtel and Centertel.
Poland's fixed-line telephone operator, Netia Holdings, is also bidding in a consortium with Novator Telecom Poland.
Poland's telecommunications regulator, URTiP, launched the tender in February, aiming to encourage a fourth mobile operator into the domestic market. A winner will be chosen by May 9.
In 2000, the Polish regulator called off the 3G license auction after receiving just three bids for the five available licenses. Hutchison pulled out from the auction due to high market risk.
