Korea-based manufacturer Samsung is to produce a new range of WiFi compatible 3G mobile phones. The company will use a low-power 802.11 W-Lan solution developed by Philips in the new range. According to Samsung, the new phones will give mobile users the choice of connecting up via a WiFi access point or, where such a link is not available, via the normal mobile network.
The phones will contain a Philips semiconductor solution that uses less than 2 milliwatts of power. According to Samsung the handsets will also boast a radio performance delivering up to +18 dBm at the antenna port, which, the company argues, is 6 dBm more than most competing solutions. Due to this enhanced performance, the Korean manufacturer argues that its phones will offer long-lasting, high-quality wireless network connections for users at hotspots.
In addition, a press statement from Samsung pointed out that the Philips solution can be implemented in less than a 150 mm(2) of printed circuit board area - allowing significant space savings in next-generation mobile phones.
