Emerging markets offer wireless growth opportunities - report
April 27, 2005
Steve Jones in his new article, "Expanding mobile penetration through targeting emerging markets" concludes that the reality of the Dual Market is clear to see in the emerging markets where the small and relatively affluent minority who own mobile phones contrast sharply with the large and lower income majority who donąt.
This latter segment represents a large untapped commercial opportunity but only if new ways of running a mobile business are adopted by operators and vendors alike.
These new approaches include:
-- Introducing handset and tariff schemes to suit each segment
low and high end in a Dual Market.
-- Expanding the choice and volume of distribution channels.
-- Employing new ways to economically handle subscriptions.
-- Deploying technology strategies that minimise costs and offer
device and service portfolios to cater for each of the Dual Market
segments.
The technology that is best placed to deliver these cost and service
benefits is GSM. This proven technology platform offers cost-reducing,
economies of scale, device and service richness and common operational
benefits.
By seeking to grow a Dual Market in this way especially the very large segment that presently doesnąt own a mobile phone, the wireless industry can help the emerging nations of the world to be responsible for another speedy and exponential increase in mobile subscribers, with the associated benefits to the economic prosperity of that country.
