Pipex and Intel to Work on UK WiMax
April 4, 2006 - source: BWCS
UK ISP Pipex Communications has announced a £14.5 million deal with US chip company Intel to roll-out high-speed wireless services using Pipex's WiMax licence.
The ISP says it will launch WiMax services across 50 UK cities, starting with London and Manchester. At the same time it announced that its pre-tax profits before amortisation and integration costs had risen from £6.2 million to £7.1 million in the year to the end of December 2005. A statement from the company said that this was broadly in line with City expectations.
Intel has been a major player in the developing WiMax sector and last year announced a joint plan with Motorola to generate greater momentum behind WiMax technology, based on the proposed IEEE 802.16e standard, for both fixed and wireless broadband applications. In addition to working jointly to advance WiMax standards, the companies say they will work together on interoperability testing of Motorola mobile devices, network equipment, and customer premises equipment with Intel products.
