Samsung unveil zx20 3G HSDPA handset

April 5, 2006

At the annual CTIA Wireless 2006 trade show, Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung) announced plans to launch what is expected to be the first commercial HSDPA phone in the U.S. market, the SGH-zx20. High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is the latest technology giving consumers the freedom to enjoy the most advanced video streaming capabilities.

The zx20, encased in a sleek Samsung-signature clamshell with silver and black accents, employs fast mobile broadband technology enabling consumers to download content seven times faster than phones operating on current 3G UMTS and GSM/GPRS networks. As a 1.8 Mbps HSDPA handset, the zx20 enables speedy data connections that rival EVDO and are comparable to home networks' DSL speeds, meaning quicker access to the Web, video content and downloads.

The zx20's 262K-color TFT display gives users a brilliant screen on which to view downloads from the Internet, or video and still images taken with the 1.3 megapixel camera. The phone's external microSD memory card slot (card sold separately) can be used to save and transfer these images, videos or music tracks to and from the phone. The integrated media player can launch downloaded files in a variety of formats, providing users with even more selections.

For additional productivity, downloading content, surfing the Web, sending instant messages and emailing are all completely accessible while on a live call when using the zx20's speakerphone or Bluetooth headset.

"Samsung is pioneering the next realm of wireless technology for consumers with HSDPA testing and development, including the soon-to-be-available zx20," said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president, Samsung. "Applications once possible only on a PC are now available on Samsung's zx20."

In addition to its entertainment capabilities, the zx20 also features a speakerphone, Bluetooth wireless technology support and a host of messaging options such as AOL, ICQ, Yahoo! and MSN. Users also can personalize their phones with enhanced sound, voice, video and animation.
