TI in Japanese Tie-Up
April 9, 2006 - source: BWCS
According to reports in the Japanese business daily, Nihon Keizai Shimbun, local manufacturers Matsushita and NEC plan to set up a joint venture to produce new 3G mobile phone chips with US chip giant Texas Instruments Inc. The newspaper believes that the deal may be done very soon and that a Japanese-based entity could be up and running by this summer.
Matsushita, which sells its phones under the Panasonic brand, already has a partnership with NEC Corp to develop software for 3G handsets. In addition the Dallas-based chip-maker already supplies both companies with some of the chips they need for third-generation cell phones. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that chips from the new venture would be sold to other suppliers as well as to the proposed partners.
