Mobile helps make music history - 1 in 5 Gnarls Barkley tracks downloaded on 3

April 9, 2006

Gnarls Barkley sold more than 20% of the single 'Crazy' on 3 last week, the mobile media company revealed. The track has topped the charts through digital download sales alone and these findings highlight the major impact mobile sales are having on the UK chart.

'Crazy' is currently the fastest selling audio track ever on 3, with more than 6,000 now being downloaded over the air daily by 3 customers.

The findings come as 3 celebrates the millionth audio download on its award-winning music service. With average sales of over 200,000 tracks per month, 3's audio service has made up over 53% of mobile audio track downloads since the start of 2006, according to the Official Charts Company (OCC), the body responsible for compiling the UK charts.

OCC figures also show that 3's audio sales already account for 3.7% of the combined singles chart and 7.5% of the download chart this year.

Graeme Oxby, Marketing Director of 3, said: "These figures show that 3 is dominating mobile music. Every one of our 3.5 million customers has a music shop in their pocket, and their choices now have as much impact on the charts as a traditional music store."

"3 has set the benchmark for music over mobile - we were the first to offer full length music videos and the first to offer dual-download to your mobile and PC . As a mobile media company, we're really excited by how well Gnarls Barkley has sold on 3."

3 has also launched Music, Talk and Text 700, the first dedicated tariff for music lovers. As well as a generous talk, text and video allocation, music fans can download 5 tracks per month to their mobiles as part of their package.

Through April and May, all 3 customers can download audio tracks over the air for 99p. 3's dual download service means that any track bought over mobile can be downloaded to a PC or music player for no extra cost.

Three facts about 3:

- 3, a mobile media company, launched the UK's first 3G network.

- 3 has over 3.5 million customers in the UK and over 11.9 million worldwide.

- The 3 network offers national coverage for calls and texts, and over 88% population coverage for 3G services.
