KDDI to complete with DoCoMo on pricedate: August 13, 2001 KDDI President Tadashi Onodera said KDDI will offer 3G handsets this autumn that can compete on price with those of rival NTT DoCoMo. He said the biggest difference between KDDI's cdma2000 1X and DoCoMo's FOMA will be the handset price and will keep the price of its 3G handsets the same as the cdmaOne type. Cdma2000 1X is the first step in the evolution to 3G, which improves packet data transmission capabilities and speeds in the network, and also boosts voice capacity by nearly two times over today's CDMA capacities to speed of 144kbps. The 1X technology will be an add on to its cdmaOne technology instead of a new network said Onodera. KDDI is planning to introduce WAP 2.0, xHTML and Java into its CDMA2000 1X, this will enable KDDI 's customer to view iMode content. SK Telecom was the first operator to launch 1X in October of 2000 and classified by the ITU to be the first truly 3G network in the world with a maximum speed of 144kbps.
