Romanian's MobiFon set to buy next generation licencedate: August 13, 2001 Ted Lattimore, president and chief operating officer of MobiFon, said the company is interested in buying a Romanian 3G license. Lattimore said that he does not know how much the UMTS license will cost. The price could be between US$5 million and US$500 million and the network investment will be from US$240 million to US$400 million. Mobifon launch GPRS as a test service and the commercial launch will be at the end of 2001. Romanian is set to copy its Hungarian in auctioning four 3G licenses in early 2002. Lattimore said, at the end of 2001, MobiFon will have about 1.8 million to 1.9 million customers. MobiFon network has geographical coverage of 79% and population coverage of 91%, while its customers can have roaming in 83 countries through 180 operators.
