Slovakia to Offer Bundled 2G and 3G Licencedate: August 14, 2001 - source: The government in Slovakia is planning to launch the sale of a combined GSM and UMTS licence by the end of this year. According to a report from Reuters, the authorities are hoping that the lure of a 3G licence will entice more bidders for the country's third GSM concession. The successful bidder will receive its licences early next year and could begin GSM operations in the second half of 2002, once the period of exclusivity for the current two operators ends in July. Under its original plans announced in September 2000 the Slovak government had originally intended to award three UMTS licences by the end of 2001; two were to go to the country's existing mobile operators, EuroTel and Globtel, while the third was to be auctioned off separately. The planned auction was cancelled due to bids from only one operator- 3 national licenses are on offer at 2 x 15 MHz paired plus 5 MHz unpaired and the duration is 15 years. By the end of June Globtel could claim a 58% share of the Slovak mobile market with around 907,000 subscribers, while EuroTel had attracted 665,000 customers. Commercial rollout is expected to begin in 2003.
