Telekom Malaysia Awards Motorola with CDMA2000 Contract in Malaysia

date: August 17, 2001

Telekom Malaysia has awarded Motorola a three-year contract valued at an estimated US $145 million to deploy a nationwide 3G CDMA 2000 1X network. Telekom Malaysia, along with Motorola, will bring the first CDMA service to Malaysia's growing wireless market.

This is the eighth CDMA contract announced by Motorola since October 2000.

In Malaysia, deployment is underway and Phase One of Telekom Malaysia commercial CDMA service is expected to be launched by December 2001, enabled by Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS).

This contract will be the world's first CDMA hybrid network that converges fixed wireless, and mobile and Internet services.

"Motorola will provide Telekom Malaysia with a seamless migration strategy from its current analog network to deploy CDMA with a future migration solution to CDMA2000 1X," said Simon Leung, corporate vice president and general manager of the Asia Pacific Region for Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector.

"In addition to our current GSM system offering, Telekom Malaysia is excited about the possibilities that come with a full offering of CDMA," said YBhg Dato' Dr. Md Khir bin Abdul Rahman, chief executive of Telekom Malaysia. "CDMA technology helps telecom operators to optimize the existing spectrum by offering both enhanced voice capacity and data services for our valued customers.

"At the same time, CDMA will provide Telekom Malaysia with an effective 'last mile' connectivity solution to the remote rural areas where it is practically impossible to install lines, because of the cost and technical difficulty. CDMA will not only provide this, but it will also complement with our desire to increase the nation's Internet penetration rate and simultaneously contribute to the establishment of a knowledge society," said Dr Khir.

CDMA2000 1X technology provides peak packet data rates service of up to 144 kilobits per second. Users will be able to enjoy high performance data services such as Internet access, mobile commerce applications and on-line gaming.
