Turkey may sell licenses next year

Turkey is planning to sell licenses for 3G mobile services late next year, the head of the country's Telecommunications Board has said.

Turkey absolutely must issue UMTS licenses. Our work on UMTS is continuing, Mehmet Fatih Yurdal, head of the Telecommunications Board, said.

Yurdal also said the number of licenses issued would depend on how many bidders came forward. How many operators there will be will depend on the market itself. In my opinion it could be parallel to GSM, there could be four, he said.

The four firms with GSM licenses are Turkcell, Telsim, Aria and the Aycell network owned by Turk Telekom.
